ELLISVILLE – ASA Miami's Annelize Aleixo's goal with 88 seconds left on the clock helped the visiting Silver Storm edge 14th-ranked Jones, 1-0, on a wet and muggy Friday evening at Bobcat Soccer Field.
In a match that lived up to the early-season hype, both teams had their fare share of chances. The game-winning goal for ASA in the 89th minute ultimately came down to a miscommunication just outside the box that allowed Aleixo to take a free ball and score.
Scoreless at the break, JC's best chance to pull ahead was in the 57th minute. The Bobcats were awarded a penalty kick after a hand ball in the box, but Hannah Kuster came up with a brilliant save on Rachel Barnaby to keep the match square. Minutes earlier, Barnaby hit the crossbar on a potential go-ahead goal.
ASA out-shot Jones 25-11 and owned a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. Sarah Sumrall and Alexis Wilson split time in the net and combined for nine saves.
The Bobcats will return to action on Monday, Aug. 26 at 5 p.m. against Holmes. The match will be played at Freedom Ridge Park in Ridgeland.
