POPLARVILLE – For the fourth time this season, Pearl River Community College could not get a decision in a women's soccer match.
Mississippi Gulf Coast converted a penalty kick with 30 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game 2-2, and that's how it stayed through 20 minutes of overtime in the South Division contest at the PRCC Sports Complex.
PRCC is still undefeated for the season, now standing at 6-0-4 overall, and are second in the South Division at 3-0-3. Gulf Coast stayed alive in the MACJC playoff race at 4-5-2 and 1-3-2. It was the second time this season the two teams finished tied.
The Lady Wildcats jumped on top early, just 2:40 into the game, when sophomore Kayla Nobles (Hurley) knocked in a shot on a pass from sophomore Caroline Grafe (Kiln).
The Lady Bulldogs tied it 1-1 at 65:29 on just their third shot of the game, but Pearl River regained the lead at 77:11 when Abbi Henderson headed in a rebound off a corner kick for an unassisted goal.
It appeared that PRCC was going to hang on, but with 30 seconds remaining, a Lady Wildcat player was called for a handball in the 18-yard box, and Pearl River sophomore goalkeeper Karsen Gildea (Ocean Springs) was unable to stop the PK.
The Lady Wildcats had several good chances in the second overtime, including a point-blank shot at an open net with less than 90 seconds remaining that was kick-saved by a Gulf Coast defender.
PRCC finished with 24 shots, 11 on-goal to just nine, five on-goal, for Gulf Coast, and the Lady Wildcats had eight corner kick to none for the Lady Bulldogs.
Pearl River will be back in action at 1 p.m. next Saturday, as the Lady Wildcats travel to Summit to battle Southwest Mississippi.
