For the first time in program history, the Jones College women's basketball program ranks No. 1 nationally
The latest National Junior College Athletic Association Division I women's basketball poll has been released and Jones College is the No. 1 program in the country.
Bobcats head coach Missy Bilderback is in her sixth season and has built a powerhouse program. Bilderback is an eye popping 138-20 (.873) since taking over the program in Ellisville. Last season, JC was 24-4 before the COVID-19 pandemic halted play nationwide. The Bobcats have been ranked for 60 consecutive NJCAA polls dating back to 2017.
This year's roster is another explosive and very deep one. "This teams maturity and love for competition along with their ability to come in and work hard every day is something that separates them" says Bilderback.
Redshirt sophomore Endia Holliday (South Jones HS) is one of multiple players making a difference. "She has been with us now for three years. She had an ACL injury last year and redshirted. She signed with Western Carolina during the early signing period. When she walks between the lines, she is going to give maximum effort. Endia has a great attitude which is contagious," says Bilderback.
Jones guard Daisha Bradford is another talented player; she ranks second in the league averaging 16.8 ppg and is fourth in rebounds with 7.8 a game. Freshman JaKayla Johnson (Clinton, HS) is another difference maker; Johnson averages 13.1 ppg to go along with 7.1 rebounds per game. "In my opinion, she's the best freshmen in the league," says Bilderback.
One concern Bilderback had when the season started was the overall team size. It was not as good as it has been in previous years. "But you can't measure heart and competitive spirit and toughness. That is one big thing I've been really impressed with," said Bilderback.
Jones is also battle tested. They have not shied away from quality competition outside of the conference. JC went to Georgia, played the No. 2 team in the country (at the time) in South Georgia Tech, and won 69-57. Jones also beat a top 10 program in Shelton State this season. "Those are two incredible non-conference wins because those programs are very good and they are well respected," said Bilderback.
Jones knows they have to be ready each night in conference play. Moreover, they have been. JC has been perfect going 11-0 overall and 9-0 in conference action. Bilderback believes that this team is built for a deep post-season run. "This team is doing everything we have asked them to do, they're very talented, they're hungry, and they want a chance to win the south division, they want to win the Region, and then go onto the NJCAA national tournament in Lubbock. But, first things first, we need to stay focused and secure the south division" says Bilderback.
Jones faces south division rival Copiah Lincoln tonight at 6pm.
