SMCC Lady Bears get 73-64 home win over Hinds

The Lady Bears picked up a much-needed win Thursday night at home as the swept the season series over the Hinds Lady Bulldogs with a 73-64 MACJC South Division win at home.

 

After falling behind 6-0, a Jamaya Galloway trey brought the Lady Bears to within 6-3 with 7:24 left in the opening quarter.

 

A layup from Galloway gave the Lady Bears their first lead of the game, 18-17, with 1:54 on the clock. A late free throw from Hinds left the teams tied 18-all at the end of the quarter.

 

Tootie Carter nailed a short jumper with 9:55 left in the second quarter to put the Lady Bears (7-10, 2-6) on top 20-18.


The teams then traded the lead twice before Hinds took a 34-30 lead into the locker room at the end of the quarter.

 

The third quarter was a back and forth affair. A pair of Ty Lee free throws put the Lady Bears ahead 35-34 with 8:30 on the clock.

 

The lead changed hands four times before a Carter free throw gave the Lady Bears a 50-44 advantage with 2:35 on the clock. The home team then carried a 52-49 lead into the final quarter.

 

After Hinds (5-11, 0-8) took a 53-52 lead early in the fourth quarter, an Alexus Marsh two pointer put the Lady Bears back in the lead, 54-53, with 9:03 left in the game. It was a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way. Five free throws in the final 0:52 of the game, three from Galloway, gave the Lady Bears their final margin of victory.

 

"Tootie Rankin, Maddi Gatte and Breanna Zeringue had a tough assignment tonight guarding (Hinds') Victoria Johnson," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris, "but all three did a good job."

 

"Jamaya did a nice job finishing the game at the line," Harris continued, "(and) Tootie Carter and Amari (Pittman) made some big shots."

 

Galloway led the Lady Bears' offense with 15 points while Carter scored 13 and Lee had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Lady Bears were 24-31 from the free throw line.

 

Johnson scored 25 points for Hinds to top all scorers. She and her teammates combined to go 11-16 at the free throw line.

 

The Lady Bears hit the road for their next game, traveling to Meridian Community College on February 4 to face the host Lady Eagles. Game time is set for 5:30.
