The Lady Bears found themselves on the wrong end of a 70-55 decision Monday night in Eunice, LA, as they fell to the host LSU-Eunice Lady Bengals.
Eunice led 7-2 with 5:54 left in the opening quarter before the Lady Bears closed the gap to 13-10 at the end of the first 10:00 of play. Jamaya Galloway had four of the Lady Bears' points.
Eunice outscored the Lady Bears 7-2 to begin the second quarter and extend their lead to 20-12 with 7:17 on the clock. The Lady Bears th57-50en outscored their hosts 7-1 over the next 2:30, getting five more from Galloway, to trim their deficit to 21-19. After Eunice scored five straight, a pair of Ty Lee free throws left the Lady Bears trailing 26-21 at intermission.
In the third quarter, a Mylicia Harness bucket brought the Lady Bears (2-3) to within 30-28 with 8:10 showing. But, Eunice would outscore the Lady Bears 15-6 the rest of the quarter to take a 45-34 lead advantage with one quarter left to play.
An old-fashioned three-point play from Galloway brought the Lady Bears to within seven, 47-40, with 8:02 remaining. That, however, would be as close as the Lady Bears would get the rest of the way as Eunice (3-3) went on to claim the win.
"Despite the outcome, we are encouraged by our ability to follow a game plan early," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "Mylicia had a great night on the boards, Ty made some tough buckets (and) Jamaya was really good against the press. We just missed too many layups; it's just that simple."
Galloway scored 16 points to pace the Lady Bears' offense. Lee finished the game with 15 points while Harness had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. The Lady Bears made good on 16 of 24 free throws.
Sissy Saucier scored 16 points to top the Eunice offense. She and her teammates were successful on 22 of 32 free throws.
The Lady Bears return to action Thursday night when they travel to Moorhead to face the Mississippi Delta Lady Trojans. Tipoff is set for 6:00.
