POPLARVILLE – Pearl River Community College played 88 minutes of dead-even soccer against Mississippi Gulf Coast Friday night in men's soccer action.
But a second into the 89th minute of play, the Bulldogs got a ball past Wildcat goalkeeper Kobe Lie, and that was the difference as the Wildcats dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat in South Division play at the PRCC Sports Complex.
The victory clinched a second consecutive South Division title for Gulf Coast (9-2 overall, 6-0 division). PRCC remained in second place in the division at 7-5 and 4-2.
The Wildcats had an opportunity to score late in the first half, when the Bulldogs were called for a foul inside the 18-yard box. But the penalty kick by freshman Joe Elliot (Leicester, England) was blocked and the first half ended scoreless.
The game remained scoreless, despite two good shots at the goal from Elliot and freshman Jevaun Ennis (Maypen, Jamaica), until the 88:01 mark when Gulf Coast scored its goal.
Up to that point, Lie, the redshirt freshman from Hattiesburg, had saved 10 shots, but was unable to get to the last shot he faced.
The Wildcats will be on the road for their next game, next Saturday at 3 p.m. against Southwest Mississippi. PRCC completes its regular season on Oct. 17 at home against Jones County.
