MS Gulf Coast CC clinches MACJC South 3-seed

Mississippi Gulf Coast defeated Southwest 100-96 Thursday to clinch better seeding in one postseason tournament and a spot in another.

The Bulldogs (16-7, 9-5 MACJC South) earned the No. 3 seed in the division in a straight head-to-head showdown with the Bears (16-7, 7-7). That means they will be pitted against North No. 2 Holmes in the MACJC Tournament which starts Monday at Senatobia. The bracket, with game times, will be released, Friday morning.

"I'm happy we got the three-seed as opposed to the four-seed and we don't have to play Northwest on their home floor," Gulf Coast coach Wendell Weathers said. "But everybody tells me that Holmes might be the best team up there anyway."

Dedoch Chan (Fr, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall) matched his season high with 33 points. LaRaymond Spivery (Fr, Lucedale/George County) got a season-high of his own with 27.

"Spivery was really, really good. He just had a really, really smart, really solid game," Weathers said. "D.C. in this league is just a different kind of guy. He's big, he's strong, he knows how to play. He handles it. He's really hard for one guy to guard him. It doesn't take a genius to know what to do with him."

Keevon Oney (Fr, Gulfport/Gulfport) added 20.

"I think all of our guys played well tonight," Weathers said.

Gulf Coast led by 15 at halftime but saw the lead evaporate in a flurry of Southwest 3-pointers. The Bears made 17 on the night.

The Bulldogs, however, were able to retake the lead and close out their ninth road victory in 11 tries.

"I don't think we did anything particularly to lose the lead," Weathers said. "We kept scoring, we were just scoring two-point baskets. They came down jacking 3-point shots up, and they all went in."
