Bigger than Basketball

JACKSON- The Hinds Community College Bulldog basketball program spent time giving back last week to the children at Sykes Elementary School in Jackson.

"This is something we do every year. It gives our guys an opportunity to give back to the community, and it shows them that what we are trying to do is bigger than basketball," said third-year head coach Yusef Fitzgerald.

The Bulldogs took the students at Sykes Elementary through some basketball agility drills while spending some time visiting with them and answering any questions the kids may have about what it takes to be a college basketball player.

Coach Fitzgerald and his staff also sat down with the students at the school to share their knowledge on the game but more importantly what it takes to make it off the court.

"Myself and our guys were once in these kids shoes, so anything we can do to be a positive example and influence for these kids is what it's all about," said Fitzgerald.

The Bulldogs will take the court for the first time tomorrow as they'll compete in the CBHoops Juco Showcase in Emerson, Georgia. They'll face off against Motlow State at 10 a.m. followed by a matchup against Walters State at 2 p.m.
